Smart Home Devices That Work Without Monthly Subscription

It genuinely annoys me when I buy something and then discover I need a monthly subscription for it to actually work. In the smart home world, this is way too common: you buy a camera and they want to charge you to store recordings, you buy a thermostat and they want to charge you for features that should be basic. That’s why I’ve put together this guide to smart home devices that work without a monthly subscription, where every device I recommend works at 100% without paying anything extra.

The subscription problem in smart homes

The business model for many smart home brands is selling hardware cheaply and then hooking you with a monthly subscription. It’s the classic “razor and blades” model:

Not all devices are like this, but enough that it’s worth checking before you buy.

How much subscriptions cost long term

ServiceMonthly priceCost over 3 years
Ring Protect€3.99/month€143.64
Nest Aware€8/month€288
Arlo Secure€2.79/month€100.44
August€2.99/month€107.64
Total (4 devices)€17.77/month€639.72

Pro-tip: Before buying any smart device, Google “[brand] subscription required.” It’s a step that should be instinct and will save you from nasty surprises.

Categories that DON’T need subscriptions

The good news is that most smart home categories work perfectly without a subscription. Only a few (mainly cameras and alarms) have the subscription model.

Smart plugs

No decent smart plug requires a subscription. They all work the same way:

Best subscription-free options:

DevicePriceAppFeatures without subscription
Gosund SP111~€8Smart LifeEverything, including consumption
TP-Link Tapo P110~€12TapoEverything, including consumption
Sonoff S26~€10eWeLinkEverything
Eve Energy~€35Eve/HomeEverything, Thread+Matter included

Smart bulbs

Another category where subscriptions don’t exist:

Smart thermostats

Most thermostats work without subscription:

Sensors

Motion, door, temperature, smoke sensors all work without subscription with their manufacturer apps or compatible hubs.

Security cameras: the most contentious category

This is where brands fight hardest to charge you a subscription. But there are subscription-free options that record locally.

Cameras that record without subscription (local storage)

What do you lose without a subscription?

With local microSD storage:

My personal setup

I use Reolink and Tapo cameras with 128 GB microSD cards. For the scenario where a camera gets stolen, I have automatic backup to a local NAS with Home Assistant. Total cost: €0 subscription per month.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions

Do all cameras require a subscription?

No. Cameras from Reolink, TP-Link (Tapo), Amcrest, and Aqara work at 100% without a subscription. They use local storage on microSD cards or NVRs. Only subscription-focused brands (Ring, Arlo, Nest) require it for full features.

Do I lose important features without a subscription?

Depends on the device. For smart plugs, bulbs, thermostats, and sensors, you lose nothing. For cameras, you lose cloud storage and some advanced AI features. But with local storage, you have everything 95% of users need.

Is local microSD recording secure?

Yes, as long as you protect your WiFi network. If someone steals the camera, you lose the recording. That’s why I recommend automatic backup to a NAS or local server if security is your priority.

Are AI features on subscription-free cameras good?

Getting better every year. Reolink and Tapo cameras from 2025-2026 have local person, vehicle, and pet detection without sending anything to the cloud. AI runs on the camera itself, not on a remote server.

Conclusion

Most smart home devices work perfectly without a monthly subscription. Smart plugs, bulbs, thermostats, and sensors never need one. For cameras, choose brands like Reolink, Tapo, or Aqara that record locally. The money you save on subscriptions (easily €100-200 per year) can go toward more devices. Always read before buying, look for “no subscription” as a purchase criterion, and your wallet will thank you.
